4 All-Important Lessons Dr. Seuss Can Teach Small Businesses About Social Media Content and Engagement

Social media content. Dr. Seuss. Yeah, I know, but hear me out and it’ll all make perfect sense.

Manini is a HUGE fan of Dr. Seuss. If you follow me on Facebook, you’d probably have seen this update a few months ago.

So, y’know,  I’m all for finding inspiration in the simplest of places, and while hearing her read Dr. Seuss, I realised we, small business owners, have a lot to learn from The Cat in the Hat and team.

What Dr. Seuss Can Teach Us About Social Media Content Marketing

1. Create Content that Acknowledges Your Community

“A person’s a person, no matter how small.” ― Dr. Seuss from Horton Hears a Who!

Your content on social media should never be just all about you but about your people. Whether it’s asking them questions about their likes, dislikes, preferences or life, or it’s inviting them to share their thoughts with you on current trends and events, a person’s a person, no matter how small.

So, regardless of how big or small your community may, acknowledge the people who make it up.

This also, goes for responding to comments on your blog or social networks.

2. Add your YOU-NIQUENESS to your Content

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” ― Dr. Seuss from Happy Birthday to You!

That’s right. You are You. There is no one who is Youer than You. Right? So, bring that into the posts you share and put out there.

As the great man himself asks,

“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” ― Dr. Seuss

Sure, it’s great to be inspired {ahem, exactly what we’re doing here!} but at the end of the day, put YOUR spin on it, bring in your unique story and experiences, because that, my friend, is priceless.

3. Create Content that Makes a Difference

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” ― Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

Yep. Like I shared in my post about using social media content to inspire, you can create change, make a difference. Care an awful lot about something and then, use the power of social to spread change. Because only then, things will get better. Yup, they will.

4. Create Content with Care and Balance it Perfectly

“So be sure when you step, Step with care and great tact. And remember that life’s A Great Balancing Act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed) Kid, you’ll move mountains.” ― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

It’s easy to get reckless on social media and just shoot stuff out that may hurt or annoy folks. Sure, you can’t please everyone, but like the good Doctor says, “Step with care and great tact.” Yes, because social media, like life, is a great balancing act.

So, before you flood the feed with links to your latest posts, products or holiday photos, think are you balancing it out? Are you sharing content that’s not just about you but about your community as well?social spread
